General Information

All these courses are made up of:

  • high quality course notes presented online (using prezi software, you can try this out on this link) including lots of visual images and how-to videos.

  • Zoom sessions 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-15:30 each day. 

Each part of the course  should take you around 4-5 hours to complete.  Everything is presented in logical steps that are easy to follow and also includes additional, separate instructions for students who choose to work digitally.

In order that you can have the maximum benefit from each course, all course materials (including recordings of the zoom sessions) are available for you to refer to for 12 weeks after the end of the course.

You will need:

  • A good quality cartridge paper A4 sketchbook (140gsm or above), or loose sheets of cartridge paper,

  • 2B pencils,

  • rubber,

  • black pigment fine liners (or equivalent) in varying thicknesses,

  • a small set of watercolours. 

Texture in Pen & Ink



30-31 January 2021


Discover and interpret textures in pen & ink through a range of interesting and simple drawing exercises looking at how texture relates to relative tone and how it sets the mood. 

Translucency in Pen & Ink



6-7 March 2021


This course looks at how to tackle a variety of transparent and translucent subjects: glass jars, lenses, plastic bags and water.  It takes a systematic approach to these most challenging subjects, offering plenty of useful solutions to illustrating these in a variety of media

Spring Growth



28-30 March 2021


Get out into fresh spring colours looking at buds, blooms, growth and renewal in this 3-day online sketch workshop Sunday-Tuesday, 28-30 March 2021.  Lots of simple, enjoyable drawing exercises to engage your creativity. 

Saffron Walden Urban Landscape



6-9 April 2021


This 4-day online sketch workshop looks at depicting architecture and urban landscapes.  Held live from Fairycroft House in Saffron Walden, it looks at how to create imaginative, intuitive configurations and explores lots of options for adding colour to your work.  Saffron Walden is an ideal location for this course, with varied and beautiful architecture.
