Online Courses
Summer Term 2021

General Information

All these courses are made up of:

  • high quality course notes presented online (using prezi software, you can try this out on this link) including lots of visual images and how-to videos.

  • Zoom sessions 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-15:30 each day. 

Each part of the course  should take you around 4-5 hours to complete.  Everything is presented in logical steps that are easy to follow and also includes additional, separate instructions for students who choose to work digitally.

In order that you can have the maximum benefit from each course, all course materials (including recordings of the zoom sessions) are available for you to refer to for 12 weeks after the end of the course.

You will need:

  • A good quality cartridge paper A4 sketchbook (140gsm or above), or loose sheets of cartridge paper,

  • 2B pencils,

  • rubber,

  • black pigment fine liners (or equivalent) in varying thicknesses,

  • a small set of watercolours. 

Architecture in Pen & Ink

This very popular course looks at drawing architectural subjects in pen & ink.  It takes you through the process of how to use visual information: researching, drawing, and creating pen textures.  We then go on to discuss the use of watercolour wash.

Reflections in Pen & Ink

Starting with standard reflections in mirrors and moving rapidly on to finding reflections in everything, this is the course that will alter your observation for ever!  Interesting subjects and lots of fun.

Colour Techniques for Pen & Ink

Join me for this extended weekend online pen & ink drawing course looking at different techniques for adding colour to pen & ink drawings including drawing with coloured ink and watercolour washes.  It focuses on the changes that occur in visual hierarchy with the inclusion of colour, considering how colour can be used to express relative tone and the complexities of creating a visual hierarchy when combining techniques.  This course is a must for anyone who wants to develop their colour work.

Join me for this extended weekend online pen & ink drawing course focusing on gardens live from East Ruston Old Vicarage, Friday to Sunday, 4-6 June 2021.  This garden has everything from the long view, to wonderful detailed structures, beautiful sculptures, glasshouses and outstanding garden specimens.  I’m very excited to be able to offer this immersive course in this amazing place.
